Underfloor heating

Underfloor heating has seen a surge in popularity in Britain over the last several years. It has been widely used in northern Europe for a long time and in recent years has become increasingly popular in the UK – particularly because of its ‘green’ energy credentials and cost effectiveness in the face of rising UK energy costs. Underfloor heating provides a type of heat called ‘radiant heat’ to deliver heat throughout the room without the need for radiators. This gives a far more even distribution of heat and frees the interior from the issues of cumbersome radiators. In addition to that the systems are remarkably low maintenance and have a long lifetime.

If you use underfloor heating your floor itself becomes the source of the heating, heating the room floor up, as opposed to a normal central heating system with radiators which emit the heat from spots in the room which push the heat toward the ceiling.

Radiant Heating Systems

Underfloor heating systems work on quite a different principal to radiator systems. Radiators heat the air in front of them to very high temperatures (up to 85° C). This hot air then rises to the ceiling, triggering a convection process which circulates the hot air through the room. However, this often results in a hot ceiling but cold floor draughts. FloRad Underfloor Systems instead use radiant energy to warm the entire floor to around 25° C, about the temperature it would be on a warm summer’s day. The radiant energy is emitted continuously throughout the room and reflected by the walls, the furniture and the ceiling, creating a uniformly comfortable room.

Cooling

Water underfloor heating systems can also be for cooling. The system is effectively used in reverse to run cool water and draw heat out of the building.
